Synthetic Turf
In May, 2008, the City Council approved a $12.9 million bid for the installation of synthetic turf on 12 fields at the Overland Park Soccer Complex.
Nearly 1.2 million square feet of synthetic turf will be installed on the fields, enough to cover the average front yard of about 460 homes in Overland Park. This is one of the largest installations of synthetic turf on a soccer complex at one location in the country.
In addition to the turf, 180,000 feet of storm drains, nearly 16,000 feet of storm pipe, 55,000 tons of rock/gravel and 3.2 million tons of crushed rubber will be used.
Installation of the turf will be done in three phases:
- Fields 1, 2 and 3 in phase one;
- Fields 9, 10, 11 and 12 in phase two; and
- Fields 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in phase three.
Timeline
Construction on the complex began in November, 2007. It will be completed in three phases:
- Infrastructure for the facility ~ grading, parking lots and utilities;
- Construction of the synthetic turf fields, irrigation, sports lighting and permanent fencing;
- Construction of concession buildings, the multipurpose field house, playgrounds.
The field installation should be completed by Aug. 1, and the facility is expected to be operational by September.
